Monday Munchies, Part 30: The Squash and the Headshot

10/28/13 | Monday Munchies

This post is a continuation of the Monday Munchies series where I show everything I eat over the course of single day. These eats took place last Saturday, almost a month after my last MM. Let’s hop to it, chaps!

Breakfast, 7:30 am:

IMG_0739

Bircher muesli (what else?) with thawed peaches and chia seeds. Served with hot Yorkshire Gold tea and nonfat milk.

We were determined to visit the Great Pumpkin Patch before it closed for the year (see this post for last year’s adventure). But first, we stopped at our favorite Amish-run bulk foods store for some awesome comestibles.

(What? You say I was just complaining about how much food we have? Well … true. But I’m a basement foods optimist.)

IMG_0751

We picked up baked goods and bulk goods and cheese goods (and I mean GOOD). When I saw these sunflower seeds (shelled, no less), I had a flashback to these giant eyesores. It would have been so much simpler to just … no. Musn’t think about that, or I might pull a Swamp of Sadness (80’s movie flashback, what).

IMG_0750

Look what I found at Beachy’s!

IMG_0753

As I’ve mentioned before, ground cherries are often used in desserts. This homemade ground cherry pocket pie was amazing: not too sweet, with a crisp crust. I ate half in no time at all.

The pumpkin patch was our next stop.

IMG_0830

This picture was preceded by “Hurry up already!” That smile is a grimace of pain.

IMG_0822

Peter claims this comfortable pig reminds him of a certain little pup. I don’t know what he means.

IMG_0827

IMG_9521

The mid-morning light was perfect so I asked Peter to take some pictures of me that I can use for dietetics-related needs. The picture I currently use (the one in the upper right sidebar) is nearly two years old.Β  I’ll ask your opinion at the bottom of the post, but for now, I’ll show you a couple of outtakes.

The first few pictures Peter took were from the chin up, making me look like the world’s toothiest pumpkin. Here, I’m showing Peter where the bottom of the picture is supposed to be:

IMG_0779

And when Peter does his best impression of a paparazzo, well:

IMG_0802

That’s when people really started to stare.

The haul:

IMG_0833

IMG_0834

Stay tuned for more squash recipes!

On the way out, a sample of roasted squash seeds and two other kinds of squash:

IMG_0831

Lunch, 1:00 pm:

Lunchtime had passed at this point, so we stopped at a Mexican place we’ve been to once before: Los Potros. I ordered a fajita, while Peter ordered something fried. He also ordered sopapillas, which came out looking not quite how we expected.

IMG_0835

Not awesome. The fajita was tasty, though. I ate about two-thirds it.

IMG_0840

Sorry. There’s absolutely no way to make this meal look attractive. Just close your eyes and scroll down a bit.

Dinner, 7:30 pm:

Lunch kept up full long past dinner time. By the time we felt the stirrings of hunger, I didn’t feel much like cooking. We had some leftover chicken from the chicken-and-rice meals we made for Bonnie while she had an upset tummy (and I realize that sounds super weird), so I cooked up some chicken marsala with mushrooms and served it with leftover roasted broccoli and wild rice. I ate everything except half of the chicken.

IMG_0846

IMG_0851

Although I could have chowed down on something sweet after this meal, I knew I didn’t need it. So, I closed the kitchen for the night.

Have a great week, everyone!

Q: Which picture is the best “dietitian Jessie” pic? Let me know in the comments below!

IMG_0806

I might be kidding about that last one …

P.S. I think this post holds the record for the most pictures of myself in a single post. I thought about writing something humble in big letters, such as “I AM NOT A NARCISSIST”, but then I realized there’s a picture of me directly above this sentence where I’m like “Hey, it’s me me me me me and only me!”, which negates anything I might say.

P.P.S. I take it back. This post wins.

P.P.P.S. If you’re still reading at this point, you deserve a reward. Here. Have this picture of a pig with sunglasses:

piggie.

    Yeah picture of a piggy!
Well I would pick 3 but if you don’t really mean it then I guess I will pick number 1.

Jessie have you ever tried acorn flour?

Well I haven’t tried it yet and I’ve only made a cup so far I’m thinking of substituting it in my bread tomorrow. I’ll let you know, but it smelled divine when I was grinding it!

    Jessie,

You are consistently one of my favorite blog reads. Solid information and creative, witty writing.

    BTW, #3 wins by far.

You couldn’t take a bad picture if you tried! But I do think #1 is the best!

Wish I could know I don’t need something sweet after dinner. I mean I KNOW but I can’t seem to stop myself. πŸ™‚

Hope you had a nice weekend!

Haha I can only imagine the types of pictures I would get if I asked the.boy to take photos of me. Somehow I think, they would start below the neck and end at my belly button… :p

    I love that first pic!

Such gorgeous squashes and pumpkins and you are gorgeous, too! I love #1, it’s more central and upfront. #2 is a bit too close to the corner and I notice your hair is slightly different. I love #3, it’s probably my 2nd favorite!

Honestly, you look beautiful in both photos, my dear. If I really had to choose though, I’d go with photo #1. Photo #2 had pumpkins in the background, and I’m very easily distracted by food. Teehee. Photo #1 was all you though, no distractions. My first choice would’ve been photo #3, hands own. It shows the fun, carefree, and well….the Jessie in you. πŸ˜‰ Sorry I’m so late. Keep up the fantastic blogging. Your writing puts a smile on my face everytime I visit. See? :DD Haha.
