Skiing with the ONE Truth!

Ω March 10th, 2010 Ω Tagged , , , , , , , , , Ω 17 Comments

Happy Wednesday, everyone! I’m so excited to share some skiing pictures with you all, so let’s get started!

Peter in the rear.

Don’t you just feel like you’re on the lift with me?

A better picture of my favorite trail:

These are called The Chutes:

I did not ski The Chutes :P

Moguls

I skied some moguls yesterday. Notice I said mogulS. That’s because I skied TWO. As in two bumps.

Yours truly:

I took a short video of Peter tearing up the moguls:

I only wish I were that good.

Lunch was the usual:

Yum.

Dinner last night was FABULOUS! We ate at Chez Betty (or Cheese Betty, as Peter calls the restaurant). What I love best about this restaurant (besides the fabulous food) is the fact that it offers “petite” portions. YES!! Let’s make this a mainstream thing!

Marinated mushrooms and goat cheese on a Parmesan cracker.

Basil-chive cornbread

Garlic-puree soup (think of the stink!)

Caramelized onion tart.

And then, disaster! I was so excited to get my petite almond-crusted salmon that I forgot to take a picture. My stomach can vouch for its deliciousness, however.

I did get a picture of dessert, of course. Chocolate molten lava cake made with only the BEST CHOCOLATE IN THE WORLD (aka Valrhona Manjari):

Talk about fuz-ZAY.

Yes, oh, yes.

Now, as I’m sure you guys are dying to know, here are the six lies and the ONE truth:

1. I’m a freestyle skiier – I love terrain parks and sometimes do 180s and was able to do a 360 once.
FALSE. As you can probably guess from this post, I’m not a crazy expert skiier. I stay off the moguls and all the slopes with wild terrain. I’m a pretty decent skier though – I like my blue squares and occasional black diamonds.

2. I’ve been to Hawai’i once, on our honeymoon.
FALSE. I’ve been twice – once on our honeymoon, and once many years ago, with my family. My strongest memory from that trip is hiking for two hours over extremely hot volcanic rock, praying that I wouldn’t fall through the crust into a molten river of lava below. Hey, who says walking doesn’t raise your heart rate?

3. The widespread obsession with Lord of the Rings drives me nuts – who cares about short people and some ring?
FALSE. This was an easy one for long-time readers. If you know LOTR at all, you’ll have seen references in this and this post.

4. I have really small feet, which has saved me a bundle because I can buy kids’ sizes.
FALSE. A former coworker once said I have “sled feet”. If you must know, they’re a size 9.

5. I only have 75% of the number of teeth a person normally has.
TRUTH! When I was eleven, I had an x-ray of my mouth in preparation for braces, and the orthodontist found out I was missing one of my molars. As in, NO permanent tooth, so that when the baby tooth fell out I would have a gap in my grin. In addition, I have NO WISDOM TEETH. Woah. (As many people have their wisdom teeth removed in a most painful manner, I like to think my lack of wisdom teeth indicates my status as a more evolved being.) As I have a very small mouth anyway, the orthodontist yanked four molars over two session (no biggie, because I got ice cream after each time). I then proceeded to have braces for FOUR YEARS, longer than any shy, socially awkward adolescent should have braces. So, to keep count, a normal person has 32 teeth (with wisdom teeth), and I had four removed, plus no wisdom teeth. So 32 – 8 = 24 teeth, 24/32 = 0.75 x 100 = 75% of full capacity.
(Note: Adam, you hit the nail on the head when you guessed this one in the comments. I should have said that DENTISTS are VERBOTEN from guessing!!)

6. When I was a kid, I announced I was going to run away from home (haven’t we all?) and actually camped out in the nearby woods for three hours.
FALSE. I’m surprised how many of you guys thought this one was true (is it perhaps an extension of some childhood wish to run away from home? :P ). We did have some lovely woods near our house growing up, but I was far too chicken to actually run away from the home that provided me with chocolate and Super Nintendo.

7. I have a strong aversion to clementines, but not oranges. I don’t know why … maybe because their small size creeps me out?
FALSE. Clementines and oranges are sooo delicious. Grapefruits, on the other hand …

I hope you had fun with this challenge. I can’t wait to see what the next batch of bloggers cook up! :)

See you guys again on Friday with some more skiing adventures!

Final Note: Happy National Registered Dietitian’s Day! I’m looking forward to being an RD … in 1.5 years :P

Q: I want to know all about you – tell me something unusual about you!!

Skiing with Six Lies and a Truth!

Ω March 8th, 2010 Ω Tagged , , , , , , , , , , Ω 16 Comments

Hello, everyone! Gorgeous day here in Utah. We’ve got some fun pictures to see, so let’s get crackin’!

Last night’s dinner was at Wahso, an Asian grill in Park City.

Cute town.

Their menu is small but varied (and fancy!). We started with steamed pork buns with pickled cucumber:

I’m not sure why restaurants call these steamed pork buns when they’re super-heavy? This appetizer breaks the rule of ordering “steamed” items on menus to keep your meals light.

For dinner, I ordered seared tuna:

Excellent plating and garnishing, as my Food Service professor would say.

Peter ordered the beef, but I’ll spare you my amateur picture (which makes the beef look like something else I can think of that’s brown and lumpy … ) . Wahso was pretty good – the portions were a perfect size, but the prices were too much for what you get. It was a fun splurge, but I wouldn’t go back there.

This morning, my regular oatmeal was accompanied by a new peanut butter:

I usually avoid Skippy because even the “natural” variety has artery-clogging palm oil, which is mostly saturated fat. However, Skippy is nice to get during a vacation because Peter and I can share it.

Now, onto the skiing! Today was GORGEOUS! The sun was shining and warm, the mountain was uncrowded, and the snow was perfect.

Please forgive the fuzzy iPhone pictures from this point on. I’m going to bring my lumpy, bumpy camera from now on just for you guys because I care about you all so much! Besides, Peter wants his phone back.

Pics from the lift:

I think Peter was getting really nervous that I would drop his phone.

Peter showing off his bug-eye goggles. Not sure why the iPhone gives a fish-eye view?

This run is my absolute favorite:

Not a very good picture of the slope. I’ll try to get a better one tomorrow.

Every day for lunch I get their mini-version of a Whole Foods salad.

I can try a little bit of my favorite toppings while consuming a huge pile of greens. And, a salad doesn’t weight me down while skiing in the afternoon. I don’t know how I’d be able to ski after a burger and fries!

Now, onto something even more fun! I was so happy to get this great blogger award from Katie at Health for the Whole Self. Thanks, hun!

Prepare yourselves! I am about to tell you SEVEN statements about myself, but only ONE is true. So, that means six statements are total LIES. Your role? Guess the TRUTH. This occasion is the only time I’ll ever lie to you, so remember this moment ;)

Here we go!

1. I’m a freestyle skiier – I love terrain parks and sometimes do 180s and was able to do a 360 once.
2. I’ve been to Hawai’i once, on our honeymoon.
3. The widespread obsession with Lord of the Rings drives me nuts – who cares about short people and some ring?
4. I have really small feet, which has saved me a bundle because I can buy kids’ sizes.
5. I only have 75% of the number of teeth a person normally has.
6. When I was a kid, I announced I was going to run away from home (haven’t we all?) and actually camped out in the nearby woods for three hours.
7. I have a strong aversion to clementines, but not oranges. I don’t know why … maybe because their small size creeps me out?

Now, to nominate seven other bloggers who I think would like to participate (I wish I could have included all of you wonderful bloggies)!

1. Samantha @ Bikini Birthday
2. Darryn @ brio.gusto
3. Kristen @ The Swanky Dietitian
4. Em @ HomecookedEm
5. Savannah @ Light Delight with TouTou
6. Kristen @ Simply Savor
7. Meghan @ Travel Eat Love

Once nominated, here is what you have to do:

1. Thank the person who gave this to you. ;)
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you.
4. Tell up to six outrageous lies about yourself, and one outrageous truth.
5. Nominate up to seven “Creative Writers” who might have fun coming up with outrageous lies.
6. Post links to the seven blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know you nominated them.

So, what do you think is the ONE true statement? Good luck, everyone, can’t wait to hear your guesses! :)

P.S. I’ve decided to post every other day or so this week so that I can gather up some good pictures for you guys … and also because it’s vacation! Hope you all don’t mind. :)
