Five Things I’m Loving Lately, Part 2
1. Deviled quail eggs.
I found these quail eggs at a local Asian grocery. To imagine how the deviled eggs were made, think of me hunched over a plateful of eggs, each the size of your thumbnail, scooping minute yolk halves from so-thin-they’re-translucent whites. Feast your eyes, because I’m never making these again.
At least I got to use up about 1/8 teaspoon of fresh dill.
2. The Taste of Champaign-Urbana:
Even though it was nearly 90 degrees F and sunny yesterday, Peter and I ordered hot breakfast sandwiches from a local food truck, Cracked. I bought the Vegasm: “sautéed spinach, sun dried tomatoes, hash browns, a fried egg, sharp cheddar or pepper jack cheese, with garlic basil or spicy chipotle pesto”. As my mouth did not implode, I assume I got the garlic basil pesto. And it was delicious.
While I was taking the picture below with my crappy cell phone camera, Peter helpfully shoved his half-eaten sandwich behind mine so I could get a clear shot of his dental records. In case, you know, I ever need them.
Thanks, Peter.
We also bought a mini-crepe stuffed with Nutella and bananas. It wasn’t as good as the Paris one, partly because it was light on spread. Nutella can cover a multitude of culinary sins.
My favorite part of the picture above are the sunglasses sitting at an awkward angle with a double reflection of crepe hovering exactly where my eyes aren’t. Where’s Jessie with Googly-Eyes?
3. This shirt.

I saw someone wearing one at the Taste of C-U and now I want my own. Purely out of empathy, I assure you.
4. This octopus-shaped pudding cake:
The kids we gave the cake to also loved it.
5. My heirloom flowers are finally blooming.
No, not the sunflowers. There’s not much heirloom about flowers that grow over 10 feet tall (which, as Peter points out, is taller than our ceiling). I planted these seeds back in early March and they’ve just begun to bloom. And what a bloom! My mini-garden is a riot of pink and white.
Have a great week, dear reader!
Q: How was your weekend?
Googly eyes, I love it! Sounds like you had an amazing weekend. The vegasm sounds just as the name implies. Hellllo yum!
My weekend was pretty great too, got to meet Alton Brown, as you know 🙂 Pretty remarkable.
JEALOUS.
One of my kids has this t-shirt: http://www.tshirtvortex.net/t-rex-genie-lamp-arm-wish-t-shirt/
Now there are two T-shirts I want.
It’s nice to know I have the mentality of a high-schooler 😀
Does it help that he’s not a typical high schooler?
Why yes, yes it does 🙂
That shirt is hysterical.
It reminded me of this cute sketch I saw on pinterest. http://online.findgift.com/gift-ideas/adult-i-love-you-this-much-dinosaur-shirt-pid-357193/ haha
i have seen those quail eggs at the grocery store but never bought it hmmmmm.. so glad you had a fun weekend 🙂
So much goodness in one post! 🙂 Those deviled eggs look very classy, they must have taken much longer to prepare than to eat! Your flowers are gorgeous, and I have never seen a dessert in the shape of an octopus before. It looks delicious, even with the tentacles.
Have a lovely week, Jessie! 🙂
I’ve never made quail eggs. I can imagine the work to make the deviled eggs…
Awesome birthday cake! And the T-shirt is very cool.
Have a great week!
I’ve only had quail eggs once- what a great photo of them!
